수세기 전, 독일 지역에서 지금 우리가 아는 크리스마스 마켓은 특별한 것이 아니었어요.

겨울 준비를 위한 작은 장터였죠.

사람들은 추운 겨울을 나기 위해 고기, 양초, 식료품 등을 사러 장터를 찾았어요.

드레스덴의 스트리첼마르크트(Striezelmarkt)는 1434년에 처음 기록되었고,

뉘른베르크의 크리스킨들스마르크트(Christkindlesmarkt)는 1600년대 초에 시작되었답니다.

 

저는 그 당시 나무 가판대 사이를 걸으며, 빵과 양초 향이 은은하게 퍼지고,

돌바닥 위에 살짝 눈이 내려 있는 모습을 상상하곤 해요.

처음엔 장터가 아주 실용적이었지만, 시간이 지나면서 작은 따뜻함이 더해지기 시작했어요.

교회의 행사, 수공예 장식, 달콤한 간식, 작은 공연들이 조금씩 들어오면서,

지금 우리가 아는 포근하고 즐거운 크리스마스 마켓으로 발전했답니다.

 

19세기쯤이 되면 나무 장난감, 반짝이는 조명, 글뤼바인(따뜻한 와인),

캐롤까지 더해져서 오늘날 전형적인 크리스마스 마켓 모습이 만들어졌어요.

오늘날에도 유럽 곳곳에는 드레스덴, 뉘른베르크, 스트라스부르, 비엔나, 뮌헨, 프라하 등

아름다운 크리스마스 마켓이 남아, 오랜 역사의 이야기를 이어가고 있답니다.

현대 유럽의 포근한 크리스마스 마켓 풍경

 

Centuries ago, in German-speaking regions,

what we now call Christmas markets were nothing magical —

just practical winter fairs.

People stocked up on meat, candles,

and other supplies to survive the cold months.

 

Dresden’s Striezelmarkt, first recorded in 1434, is often cited as one of the oldest.

Nuremberg’s Christkindlesmarkt followed in the early 1600s, though its roots may go even further back.

 

I like to imagine walking among those old wooden stalls,

the scent of bread and candles in the air, snow lightly dusting the cobblestones.

At first, these markets were functional, not festive.

But over time, they began to gather small touches of warmth:

church celebrations, handmade ornaments, sweet treats, and small performances.

Slowly, the practical fairs evolved into the cozy, magical Christmas markets we know today.

 

By the 19th century, wooden toys, twinkling lights, mulled wine, and carols became part of the mix.

Even now, Europe is full of beautiful Christmas markets —

Dresden, Nuremberg, Strasbourg, Vienna, Munich, and Prague —

all carrying a piece of that long history forward.

 

The journey from cold, functional fairs to warm,

festive wonderlands reminds me how traditions grow slowly,

layering magic onto practicality over time.
