저는 집에 스패니시 모스를 키우고 있어요.
선반에 걸어두면 조용하고도 드라마틱한 분위기를 만들어주는, 제가 참 좋아하는 식물이죠.
약간 유령 같기도 하고, 뭔가 고요하게 시선을 끄는 그 느낌.
그런데 플로리다 곳곳에 이 모스가 자란다는 걸 알고 나선
딱 하나 생각이 들었어요.
“자연 속에서 자라는 진짜 모습을 보고 싶다.”
가꾸어진 게 아니라,
있는 그대로, 나무에 자연스럽게 걸려 있는 모습.

스패니시 모스에 끌리는 이유

 

요즘 제 눈에 자꾸 들어오는 게 있어요.
바로 스패니시 모스.
핀터레스트 같은 데서 보던 꾸며진 느낌 말고,
그냥 나무에 자연스럽게 걸려 있는, 조금은 헝클어진 모습 그대로요.
마치 햇볕 쬐듯이 나뭇가지에 축 늘어져 있는 그 모습이 자꾸 눈에 밟혀요.
 
Palm Island Park에는 이 스패니시 모스가 정말 많았어요.
바람에 흔들리는 커튼처럼 나무에 걸려 있는데,
진짜 저를 사로잡았던 건 그 옆 늪지대였어요.
그리고 그 늪지에 숨은 야생동물들.
악어랑 새들? 전에도 봤죠. 동물원 유리창 너머로요.
근데 여기선... 그냥 있어요. 울타리도 없고,
딱 **“보드워크에서 벗어나지 마세요”**라는 표지판 하나.
그 순간 진심으로 느꼈어요.
우리가 우리 안에 갇혀 있고, 악어가 우리를 구경하는 기분이었어요.
문득 이런 생각이 들더라고요.

"내가 여기 산다면, 이 길이 매일 산책 코스일까?"
스패니시 모스가 머리 위에 드리워지고,
아래엔 조용한 늪지대.
아침엔 햇살을 받으며 눈 운동 삼아 걸을 수도 있고,
저녁엔 레이크 도라(Lake Dora) 너머로 일몰을 볼 수도 있겠죠.
진짜 평화로워 보이죠?
근데 하나 확실한 건 있어요.
절대 보드워크에서 벗어나면 안 돼요.
그 조용한 풍경 속 어딘가에는… 누가 숨어 있어요.
아마 이빨 있는 친구일 확률 높아요. 🐊

Why I Keep Chasing Spanish Moss

 

I’ve had Spanish moss at home.
Hanging from a shelf, dramatic and moody.
I love how it looks,

kind of ghostly, kind of peaceful.
So when I realized it grows all over Florida,

I had one thought:
I want to see what it looks like in the wild.

Just hanging from trees like it belongs there—

because it does.

Florida gave me that.

I think I have a thing for Spanish moss.
Not the styled, Pinterest kind—

In the wild, Spanish moss.

Messy.

Draped over tree branches

like it's sunbathing.

Palm Island Park had plenty.

It hung from the trees like curtains left out in the wind.
But what really got me?

The marsh.

The sense that something was watching.

 

I’ve seen alligators and wild birds before.

Sure.
In zoos. Behind glass.
But here? They were just... there.

No barrier. No cage.
Just a quiet little sign that said:

"Stay on the boardwalk."

Honestly,

it felt like we were the ones in the enclosure—

and they were watching us.

 

But I kept thinking:
If I lived here, this could be my daily walk.
Spanish moss above, marsh below.
Sunset glowing through the trees.
Morning walks for a retinal refresh.

Sounds peaceful, right?

 

But only if I stay on the boardwalk.
Because in that calm stillness?
Wildlife is absolutely hiding somewhere.

Watching.
Probably with teeth. 🐊

Palm Island Park is a quiet nature reserve in Mount Dora, a charming town just outside of Orlando, Florida.
