교과서 속 큰 역사 말고, 그냥 가끔… 살짝 궁금해지는 그런 역사요~

올드 스터드브리지 빌리지

 

크리스마스 빌리지는 사실 민속촌과 조금 비슷한 느낌이에요.
가끔 추억이 그리울 때나, 다른 시절을 살짝 엿보고 싶을 때 찾게 되는 그런 곳이죠.
둘 다 ‘그때의 삶이 어땠을까’ 살짝 들여다볼 수 있는 작은 창을 열어주는 느낌이에요~

 

몇 년 전 12월, 미국 동부 여행 중에제가

직접 찾아간 곳이 바로 매사추세츠 주 스터브리지에 있는

Old Sturbridge Village였어요.
매년 12월이면 마을 전체를 Christmas by Candlelight라는

크리스마스 마을로 꾸민다고 하더라고요.
덕분에 운 좋게 그 특별한 모습을 직접 볼 수 있었답니다~

 

크리스마스 빌리지는 원래 실제 장소가 아니라,
작은 마을을 본뜬 미니어처 장식에서 시작됐대요.
그게 점점 발전해서 지금은 미국·유럽 여러 도시에서
12월만 되면 진짜 작은 크리스마스 마을처럼 꾸며지죠.
조명, 우드 캐빈, 핫 초코, 그리고 동화 속 겨울 분위기까지~

 

Old Sturbridge Village는 뉴잉글랜드에서 가장 큰 야외 역사 박물관 중 하나예요.
1790년부터 1840년 사이의 시골 마을을 그대로 재현해 놓았고,
나무집, 오래된 간판, 돌바닥 거리, 말이 끄는 마차,
벽난로 앞에서 일하는 사람들까지 —
촛불과 따뜻한 조명 속에서 정말 ‘그때의 겨울’로 들어간 기분이었어요~

 

촛불로 은은하게 밝힌 Christmas by Candlelight 덕분에
마을 전체가 또 다른 시간대의 크리스마스 마을로 변했답니다.
휴대폰 카메라로 다 담지 못한 풍경도 많았지만,
그 한 장면 한 장면이 마음속에 오래 남았어요~

 

무엇보다 인상적이었던 건, 이곳이 단순한 크리스마스 마을과 실제 과거의

풍경 사이의 경계를 흐릿하게 만든다는 점이에요.

 

그래서 이번 방문기는 짧게나마 추억과 호기심을 담아봤어요.
‘그때는 어땠을까, 지금은 어떻게 느껴질까’
그런 궁금증을 자연스럽게 불러일으키는 곳이니까요~

A Walk Through Old Sturbridge Christmas Village

 Christmas Villages didn't start as real places —

they began as tiny collectible models, little towns in miniature.

Somewhere along the way, that idea snowballed into real spots you can visit during the holiday season,

complete with wooden stalls, lights, hot drinks, and that “storybook winter” vibe.

In some cities in the US and Europe, entire streets turn into these festive worlds every December.

올드 스터드브리지 빌리지의 19세기 주방

A couple of Decembers ago, while traveling along the East Coast,

I found myself searching for a Christmas village to visit.

 

Old Sturbridge Village in Sturbridge, Massachusetts,

is one of the largest outdoor living history museums in New England.

It recreates a 19th-century rural town,

complete with original and reconstructed buildings,

costumed interpreters, and everyday scenes from life between 1790 and 1840.

The village has real cobblestone streets, wood-frame houses,

horse-drawn wagons, and fireplaces straight out of a storybook.

 

I was lucky enough to visit while they were hosting Christmas by Candlelight,

during which the entire Old Sturbridge Village was transformed into a Christmas village —

but from another time.

 

What struck me most was how this place blurred the line

between a holiday village and a real slice of the past.

 

So yeah, that’s a little peek from my visit —

nostalgic, and the kind of place that brings out the curious part of me,

the part that wonders what it was like then and how it feels now.
